PAINT TRENDS 2020: WHAT'S YOUR PICK?

Two of the largest industry leaders for interior decorative paints, Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams, have recently announced two very distinctive directions their forecasters have set for the coming year.  Sherwin Williams naming its Color of the Year, Naval (a bold shade of navy) and Benjamin Moore announcing First Light (an airy pink hue) as their chosen Color of the Year have us questioning which direction will be the popular choice for your interiors.

Dulux Paint has also followed suit with Sherwin Williams, choosing a similar and calming blue – albeit brighter, Chinese Porcelain. While Graham & Brown also join them on the organic, tranquil side of the colour wheel with a deep bottle green hue, Adeline.

Sophisticated and mysterious, or youthful and optimistic – how will you dress your walls in 2020?

Check out the individual articles here:

#TEXTILETUESDAY RECAP: FALLING FOR FLOCK – YOUR NEW VELVETY OBSESSION

Whether it is sgraffito-style lines on a linen-blend based cloth or velvety flock adorning your walls we have a number of decorative flock patterns to offer you the much in demand luxe look you crave.  Flocking can be applied to many different surfaces (check out the Telafina fabric and the new 1838 wallcovering in the picture below). This look is created by tiny synthetic fibers that are attached onto a surface. Flock particles are sifted over the surface which has glue applied to it, and then is electrically charged to get the fibers to stand up and produce the napped effect. This can range from velvety to bristly, depending on the length of the fiber.

Missed this on @zoe.c.anderson ’s #TextileTuesday video? Check out the new flocked fabrics and wallcoverings below!

ELODIE: INDULGE IN YOUR INTERIORS

Elodie, a French name meaning wealth and riches, perfectly encapsulates the newest collection by 1838 Wallcoverings. Inspired by the Art Deco era, we couldn’t see a more fitting collection to bring us closer to the soon roaring 2020’s. Nostalgic trends are continuing to revive the glorious eras of the past and here curved forms and geometric lines tap into the glamour of a bygone time. In the 1920’s and 30’s Art Deco represented the combination of different styles with fine craftsmanship and luxurious materials, and our interpretation of the trend is perfectly in keeping with this spirit. Indulgent substrates, heritage printing techniques, decadent details and a sumptuous colour palette, not only capture the Zeitgeist of the past, but reinvent it for today’s interior schemes.

Another of Elodie’s riches is the captivating mix of printed effects and luxurious substrates, championing the true craft of wallpaper manufacture. Surface printing is a heritage wallpaper printing technique and forms patterns that look as though they have been painted by hand; works of art for your walls. Printed by skilled craftsmen on original, rare machinery dating back over 100 years, Elodie rekindles the traditions of British craftmanship. Select patterns are adorned with lavish, velvety flocks, glistening beads, high sheen foils, contemporary metallics and textured inks, bringing them to life to form unique, resplendent interiors.

#TEXTILETUESDAY – SLEEP TIGHT, DON’T LET THE LIGHT SHINE BRIGHT!

Our Dim Out collection is a must-have compilation of washable textures in a 98% dim out construction.  The soft, touchable hand and dry finish lend this practical collection an elegant sensibility while meeting the specifications required for an array of commercial settings. Dim Out is not constructed using a foam backing as blackout fabrics are so they will never block 100% of the light.  If you're looking for blackout, stay tuned for our blackout collection to hit the shelves next year! Head over to @zoe.c.anderson’s #TextileTuesday stories to catch a sneak peek of the exciting new collection launching in 2020.

#TextileTuesday – Cozying up with matelassé

Matelassé (mat-la-zay) is meant to achieve a lofty, padded look, without any padding or hand-stitching. This construction is also known as Marseilles cloth as it mimics the style of the hand-stitched quilts originating in Marseilles, France. Although matelassé was originally used mostly for bedding & furnishings, this construction has also found its way into fashion! When it comes to cleaning care, due to its construction consider professionally laundering this fabric to ensure longevity. Our matelassé patterns can be found across a few different collections. Whether it’s residential or performance you are looking for, give us a call and let us help you find the right fabric for your project.

#TEXTILETUESDAY – DANCES WITH WOOL

Wool is a protein-based fiber (keratin) available in many varieties such as: Angora, Cashmere, Mohair, Merino, Vicuna and more! Wool is a very versatile fiber that lends well to several constructions such as tweed, flannel, gabardine, loden and even baize, which is the covering for pool tables! Wool fiber is naturally crimped, providing the interior structure of wool fiber a spring-like characteristic that enables elasticity and exhibits resilience by making wool resistant to sagging and wrinkling. The finer the wool fibers are, the more crimp they have and in turn the better they drape.  The exterior of wool fiber is hydrophobic, meaning it repels water, which also makes wool naturally less prone to staining. Added benefits to wool include anti-static and inherent flame resistance. Follow the link below to cozy up your space with our upholstery rated 100% wool pattern, Cristobal.

PARALLEL LINES: STRIPES, CHECKS AND ALL THE RIGHT ANGLES

Stripes and checks of all scales are firmly back in the collective design repertoire. Versatility is key here, and it’s all about the construction: a rich velvet stripe will have a very different impact than a casual twill stripe. Layer different constructions, scales and hues for depth and impact. These highlighter-bright hues were seen on fashion runways for upcoming seasons and can be expected to filter into the décor sphere. Lime green, eye-popping pink and saturated orange are couture cool and can be softened by using them in a plush texture like velvet or felted wool.

FROM THE HOUSE TO THE GARDEN: WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT INDOOR/OUTDOOR FABRIC

Whether you are upholstering outdoor seating or toss pillows, or simply looking for a durable and cleanable upholstery fabric for indoor use, there are a few factors to consider when selecting indoor/outdoor performance fabrics as they are not all created the same. Depending on fiber type, yarn type and dyeing process, the resulting characteristics can differ widely. Outdoor fabrics brand leaders such as Sunbrella and Bella Dura use solution-dyed yarns for their textiles to create goods that have excellent colorfastness to light in addition to a soft hand and good durability.  In addition to that, Sunbrella and Bella Dura constructions are mildew-resistant as well as water and stain repellant. They are not waterproof. Outdoor fabrics created with solution-dyed yarns are marketed as bleach cleanable, however most soiled areas can be cleaned effectively with mild soap and water. Bleach can have harmful effects on the natural environment and is harsher than is generally needed for household stains.

One of the best ways to keep upholstered pieces and accessories looking fresh in either indoor or outdoor settings is with regular care and maintenance. Brush off dirt before it becomes embedded in the fabric and blot up spills soon after they occur, as the sooner soiled areas are looked after, the easier they are to clean.

Sunbrella and Bella Dura provide five year guarantees in a residential setting for stain resistance, colorfastness to water, light & crocking (transfer of color to other fabrics) under normal usage and exposure conditions.
